Decoding the program: An inside look at the Delivery Hero Tech Academy

The Delivery Hero Tech Academy officially kicked off on September 6th with a diverse cohort of 20 students representing 12 nationalities. Over the course of the next 9.5 months, the students will learn how to code in Java and Python and even get the chance to intern in one of Delivery Hero’s tech teams.

We recently sat down and asked the new cohort why they decided to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy, what they hope to learn in the coming months, and any advice they have for others thinking about starting a career in Tech.

Read on to hear what they had to what some of the students.

Why are you excited to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy?

This is the first page of a new chapter of my life and it already feels amazing to be a part of this wonderful, diverse team. I am honored to have this chance to learn and grow alongside my talented colleagues. I am sure that through the Delivery Hero Tech Academy, I will achieve my goals. I am very excited to be a member of this program which is pioneering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

I believe that by the end of this program, we will know how to code with Java and will have acquired knowledge of different software engineering skills. For example, I’m interested to know how to work with databases, APIs, and cloud services. The planned curriculum is very impressive as it is not only about the technical skills but also the relevant soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and communication. The group comes from 12 different countries, so it will also be an excellent opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures, and work more creatively.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

The relevant modules from my previous studies such as mathematics, statistics, and mechanics should help me to understand the coding concepts easier. In addition, I have some basic computer and programming skills and have previously worked with different technical software. Hopefully, this will enable me to comprehend the structures behind software engineering better.

Why are you excited to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy?

I’m excited to be given the opportunity to learn how to code at one of the best programming schools in Berlin and to have the opportunity to work in a very cool company. In addition, being paid a salary whilst studying is amazing as it means I don’t have to worry about my finances over the next 9.5 months and can focus on my studies and enjoying the course.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

I hope by the end of the program, I am equipped with the necessary knowledge to be a full-time Java back-end engineer.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

I previously went to Law school, so I definitely acquired good research skills along the way. These should be a great help in learning how to code. There’s no need to memorize tons and tons of information if you know where to find it and how to use it.

Why are you excited to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy?

Joining the Delivery Hero Tech Academy is a great opportunity for me to follow a passion that I discovered later in life. It’s great to be able to seize this new chance now.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

By the end, not only do I want to be proficient in Python, but I would also like to know some of the most commonly-used algorithms and understand why they are better than different approaches in these situations. I believe this would be a great outcome.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

I previously undertook a basic Java course as part of my studies 10 years ago and in the last few months, I have worked on Python by myself. Additionally, my previous job also involved a lot of work with Excel, so I know that I will find a job in programming. I am really looking forward to starting this new chapter in my life!

This is a really great opportunity to get started in IT. Especially if you never studied computing before, it can be tough to enter into tech roles, as self-teaching requires a lot of free time, which not everyone has the privilege to have. This program makes the field accessible to everyone.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

I am hoping to acquire the skills I need to build things with Python. I would really like to become good enough that I am able to get a software development role after the program ends.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

When I worked in retail, I often had to take care of any and all issues that arose which led to me having to learn a lot of things myself. I think my ability to go out and learn new things myself should help me succeed in the Delivery Hero Tech Academy.

Why are you excited to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy?

Coding always fascinated me, but I never had the chance to delve into it. Being able to create something from scratch by writing lines of code sounds like pure magic to me! Additionally, I love to learn new skills so the Delivery Hero Tech Academy is the perfect opportunity for me to do exactly this.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

I hope to have a good command of Python by the end of the course and hopefully be able to follow a new career path linked to coding.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

I’m a linguist and have worked in localization for over seven years, so I know a thing or two about learning a new language. I feel like my brain is wired to think in a way that hopefully makes coding intuitive. Of course, I’m just starting, but I feel ready to pursue this new adventure and challenge myself.

Why are you excited to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy?

This project brings together so many things that I find sensational. For example, learning a language with professionals, understanding a developer’s typical routine. Additionally, we get the opportunity to intern at a company working on interesting projects.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

Besides acquiring the knowledge of different software engineering skills, I’m excited to develop my teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills. I also expect to learn what a developer’s normal routine is like, and what it’s like to work in such a big and diverse company.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

Previously I learned how to collect and gather information about a problem, analyze it and come up with a solution (or multiple solutions). I believe this will help me over the course of the next 9.5 months.
