Girls’Day at Delivery Hero: How to design an amazing online food ordering app

For Girls’Day on 26th April 2018, 40 young ladies aged between 10 and 16 years visited our Hero Hub in Mitte, Berlin, keen to dive into the world of Delivery Hero and look behind the scenes of the world’s largest online food ordering service.

Taking a tour through our fabulous office, the girls discovered our work spaces before gathering in one of our lounges. It was here where they had the chance to talk to some of our own heroes, including employees from Tech, International, Marketing, HR, Finance, and Legal; the girls were truly amazed at all the career opportunities a global tech startup has to offer.

So much for theory! After all their worthwhile input in the morning, the girls were ready to see how Delivery Hero operates in everyday life – in other words, time for lunch! We used this as an opportunity to present a “delicious demo” and ordered a refreshing dessert live from one of our restaurant partners.

A special highlight of Girls’Day at Delivery Hero was one of our marvellous product designers running a workshop, which aimed to equip the girls with knowledge and skills on how to design their very own prototype for an online food ordering app. Working together in groups and having plenty of fun, the outcome was nearly 20 creative and unique app prototypes. In practice, only one version would be rolled out to the customers – but how to decide which option has the highest usability? The answer is user testing, so the girls were able to learn more about the relevance and procedures of that field.

Taking home valuable experiences, splendid memories and goodie bags filled to the brim, the girls waved goodbye in the afternoon and promised to come back for next year’s event – we can’t wait!

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the girls, their parents and their teachers for such a great day! We hope you enjoyed Girls’Day as much as we did.

About Girls’Day
Girls’Day
is a nationwide action day in Germany that has been encouraging and inspiring girls for years to consider career paths that are traditionally more often chosen by boys. Once a year, tech companies or enterprises with technical departments, as well as technical training facilities, universities, and research centres open their doors for girls of 10 years upwards. Girls’Day also encourages the surroundings of the young women – i.e. families, school, media, and employers – to participate in the campaign and change their common attitudes towards vocational orientation. In 2018, Girls’Day celebrated its 18th edition.
