Hero Award award goes to startup ‘share’ for social entrepreneurship

The Hero Award for Social Entrepreneurship 2018, which supports startups with a social or environmental mission, has been awarded to share.

share is a social brand that focuses on the 1+1 principle. For every share protein bar, bottle of water or hand soap that’s sold, the company provides one meal, one day’s water supply, or one piece of soap to a person in need.

share launched in early 2018 in Germany with 3 product lines: mineral water, snack bars, and hand soap. The company partners with the United Nations World Food Programme as well as food banks across Germany.

As of 2018, share products are sold in over 4,000 retail outlets across Germany, and have provided 2 million meals, 5,7 million days of clean drinking water, and over 548,000 soaps to people in need.

share will receive EUR 15,000 prize money, as well as a dedicated mentoring program with some of Delivery Hero’s leading business and technology experts.

Employee vote

The Hero Award winner was determined through an employee vote – all Delivery Hero employees worldwide had the opportunity to vote for their favorite from a shortlist composed by a jury.

Jeffrey Oatham, our sustainability and CSR director, commented: “share is a great company and a very worthy award winner. We are excited to support share with an extensive mentoring program to achieve their ambitious goals, both on a social and operational level.”

“The whole share team here in Berlin got really excited when we heard we were this year’s winner of the Hero Award for Social Entrepreneurship,” Sebastian Stricker, founder and CEO of share, said. “It is wonderful to have some external recognition of our work and it’s motivating us to further push boundaries. We are looking forward to working together with the Delivery Hero team.”

Most innovate pilot

An additional prize for ‘innovative pilot concept’ was awarded to Rebento, a startup with a mission to provide restaurants with reusable containers for takeout food that will be collected back from customers. Rebento will receive EUR 5,000 and support to further develop its concept.

The Munich-based startup tackles the problem of rising plastic waste due to takeaway packaging, and is developing a regional infrastructure that supplies participating restaurants with reusable boxes. This includes a simple and flexible take-back solution for consumers and provides the necessary logistics for redistribution. Rebento has already tested the concept in a small pilot phase and is now about to launch in Munich.

Carlos Gerber, co-founder of Rebento, said: “Winning the Hero Award for most innovative pilot concept is so far the absolute highlight of our small business. We want to thank Delivery Hero for believing in our team and idea. Receiving this award gives us confidence, the possibility to accelerate the go-to market and most of all, it’s the best motivation to keep working hard to revolutionize takeaway packaging.”

Jeffrey added: “Rebento’s work is very relevant to our business, as sustainable packaging is an important topic that we’re working hard on developing. It’s great to be able to reward Rebento’s efforts in this area.”
