Delivery Hero Expands: Aquires Market Leader in Germany and backs hungryhouse in the UK
Delivery Hero, the global network for online food ordering continues its rapid growth with a controlling interest in Lieferheld of Germany and a pivotal stake in hungryhouse of the UK. The rapid move has been financed by an additional round of funding, making Delivery Hero one of the best-funded companies in the online food ordering space.
Lieferheld (www.lieferheld.de) has been building a market leading and fast growing online food ordering platform for 18 months, and serves more than 5,200 restaurants in over 700 German cities. hungryhouse (www.hungryhouse.co.uk) has 4,500 restaurant partners covering the majority of the UK urban population.
“Partnering with Delivery Hero was an easy decision. It ticked so many boxes – their focus on great service aligns perfectly with our own values. They’ve also proven in Germany that they can scale faster than anyone else in this industry. That’s great news for both our partner restaurants and community of customers, as we look to expand our market position here in the UK,” commented Tony Charles, COO hungryhouse.
The enlarged company is headed by Niklas Östberg (co-CEO) and Fabian Siegel (co-CEO) and employs more than 250 delivery heroes worldwide with headquarters in Berlin, Germany. The company is currently operating in Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Australia, Mexico and the UK, partnering with more than 12,000 restaurants worldwide. Delivery Hero is expecting 2012 marketplace revenue to exceed €150 million while serving more than 3 million customers worldwide, making Delivery Hero one of the fastest growing companies in the online food ordering industry.
“The Lieferheld team has demonstrated rapid execution over the last 18 months in Germany. We are now looking forward to applying this experience in all the other markets that Delivery Hero operates in,” says Fabian Siegel, co-CEO Delivery Hero.
Food ordering globally is estimated to be a €75 billion industry, with most orders still placed by telephone. However more and more consumers discover the convenience of ordering food online every day. Instead of searching through paper menus, consumers simply enter their location and get a personalised directory of restaurants and takeaway services that deliver to them. Consumers benefit from transparent customer reviews, allowing the best delivery services to prosper. Consumers simply select their food online and choose to pay online or with cash on delivery. Industry experts claim that in the mid-term, most orders will be placed online, as has happened in other industries such as flight and hotel bookings.
“I am excited to join forces with the teams of Lieferheld and hungryhouse to build the global leader in online food ordering. The growth over the last 18 months has been breathtaking and we will now focus on consolidating the markets we are operating to ensure we play for market leadership in each of them,” commented Niklas Östberg, co-CEO Delivery Hero.
