Environmental sustainability

We want to address and help fight climate change

We are Heroes because we care – this is one of our core values at Delivery Hero. We care for our employees, partners, and the communities we operate in, and also for the environment.

We are aware of the impact our business has on the natural environment, primarily through the greenhouse gas emissions we and our partners emit, the plastic in food packaging, and the resources used by restaurants and in our office operations. Delivery Hero strives to reduce its global environmental footprint in our direct operations as well as our value chain.

Our climate action journey

Climate change and global warming are major issues impacting the world. We believe that businesses have a responsibility to address their impacts on the climate. Delivery Hero’s greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint includes both direct (i.e. Scope 1) and indirect (i.e. Scope 2 and 3) emissions from our operations, including groceries products sold by our Dmarts and the deliveries emissions (from our own deliveries and from our restaurants partners deliveries).

Since the beginning of our sustainability journey in 2020, we have been rolling out the measurement of our carbon footprint in all our markets. These measurements gave us a clear picture of our environmental impact and helped us identify key steps for our sustainability efforts. We want to take responsibility for the impact our business has on the environment. That is why our sustainability efforts set out climate action as one of our priorities, with a focus on reducing our carbon footprint.

In addition, we offset part of our direct and indirect emissions. For more details about the climate projects we support click here.

Sustainable packaging

Packaging is a byproduct of our business activities. Restaurants choose and use the packaging that enable us to deliver food to customers. Much of the food packaging in use is still made from plastic. We want to help restaurants move beyond plastic to more sustainable solutions.

Our focus is on offering packaging solutions that can be scaled across countries, despite the differences in recycling capabilities and usage. That’s why we prioritize plant-based and compostable packaging. We have launched a global sustainable packaging program in which we provide packaging to restaurants to displace their plastic packaging. We want to ensure packaging is compostable, fulfils food safety and operational needs while being price competitive.

We are also exploring reusable packaging options via pilots on a local basis.

Cutlery

Across our global platform, we are continuing to optimize an “opt-out cutlery feature” which empowers consumers to make conscious decisions about cutlery consumption.

We believe cutlery opt-outs offer a win-win scenario as restaurants save money by buying less cutlery and customers avoid the need to dispose of unwanted cutlery.

Promoting sustainability in our value chain

Becoming a more sustainable business is only part of our ambition. We strive to create a more sustainable restaurant and food delivery ecosystem. We do this by promoting responsible business practices in our supply chain, as well as encouraging our restaurant partners and customers to make sustainable choices.

By integrating sustainable thinking into our platforms, we believe we can help others lead more sustainable lives.
